    1. March 11th, 2011 is the darkest day for Japan. That earthquake was a magnitude 9.0 on the Richter Scale and lasted five minutes. The resulting tsunami devastated the northeastern coast of Japan and caused a Level Seven meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The disaster at Fukushima became the first nuclear disaster to be classified as a level seven since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster near Pripyat, Ukraine in 1986, twenty-five years earlier.
